6 Marketplace Fee Traps That Erode SG and MY Seller Margin
Each marketplace fee is published, but the base, the tax on top and the way fees stack are easy to misjudge. Six traps SG and MY sellers should check before pricing.
On Shopee Malaysia, every completed order has carried a Platform Support Fee of RM0.50, plus 8% SST, since 16 July 2025 (Shopee Malaysia: Shopee's Service Fee). On a RM100 order, that is barely noticeable. On a RM8 phone accessory, it is more than 6% of the price before any other fee is counted.
That is how most marketplace fee traps work. Each fee is published, but the base it applies to, the tax on top and the way fees stack are easy to misjudge when you price a product. Below are six fee traps that Singapore and Malaysia sellers commonly underestimate on Shopee and Lazada, with what the platform's own pages say at the time of writing (October 2026). Fees change often, so check Seller Centre for the current rates before you reprice.
Key Takeaways
- Fees often apply to a bigger base than the item price: Shopee Singapore's transaction fee is calculated on the final payment amount, including buyer-paid shipping and Shopee Vouchers, Coins or Rebates.
- Tax and fixed per-order fees hit low-priced items hardest, especially in Malaysia, where 8% SST applies on top of platform fees.
- Opt-in programmes, shipping adjustments, returns and the end of introductory fee waivers can all change your real margin without changing your listed price.
1. The Transaction Fee Base Is Bigger Than the Item Price
The rule. At the time of writing, Shopee Singapore's Seller Education Hub gives the standard transaction fee as 3.27% (GST-inclusive) of the final payment amount, which "includes shipping fees paid by the buyer and any applied Shopee Vouchers, Coins, or Rebates", and the fee is rounded up to the nearest cent (Shopee: Seller fees). Some payment methods, such as SPayLater, can carry a different rate.
The trap. Sellers calculate the transaction fee on the item price alone. If the buyer also pays shipping, or uses Shopee-funded vouchers or Coins, the base is larger than the number in your pricing sheet.
Worked example (illustrative). Suppose a buyer pays S$40 for an item plus S$3.50 in shipping. The transaction fee base is S$43.50, not S$40, so the fee at 3.27% is S$1.43 (S$1.42245 rounded up), rather than the S$1.31 you would get on the item price alone. Small per order, but it applies to every order.
How to avoid it. Model the transaction fee on the full final payment amount, and recheck the current rate whenever Shopee announces fee changes.
2. Tax and Fixed Fees Stack on Every Order in Malaysia
The rule. On Shopee Malaysia, the transaction fee is "3.78% (inclusive of 8% SST)" of the final order amount paid by the buyer before Shopee Sponsored Discounts (Shopee MY: Transaction Fee). Shopee Malaysia says it applies 8% SST on top of platform fees, including the transaction fee, Marketplace commission and other service fees, effective 1 March 2024 (Shopee MY: SST on fees). The Marketplace commission is charged on the product price after seller discounts and seller vouchers, and is also subject to 8% SST (Shopee MY: Marketplace Commission Fees). On top of that sits the RM0.50 Platform Support Fee per completed order, plus SST.
The trap. Sellers use the pre-tax commission rate from a rate card and forget the fixed per-order fee. Both errors are small on expensive items and large on cheap ones.
How to avoid it. Add SST to every platform fee in your model, and include fixed per-order fees. For low-priced products, check whether bundling items into a single order makes more sense than selling them one at a time.
3. Opt-In Programmes Add Their Own Service Fees
The rule. Shopee Singapore's Promo Xtra Programme (PXP), which replaced the Coins Cashback Programme from 18 May 2026, charges participating sellers a service fee calculated as a percentage of the item value, varying by category, with a per-item cap and higher rates during campaign periods. For example, at the time of writing, Shopee lists 5.45% capped at S$60 on non-campaign days for non-electronics categories, and 6.54% capped at S$70 during campaign periods (Shopee: What is a Service Fee?; Shopee: Promo Xtra Programme). New sellers who join may get a 30-day service fee waiver.
The trap. Sellers join a programme for the traffic and treat its cost as a marketing expense to review later, rather than a per-order fee that stacks on top of commission and the transaction fee. During campaign periods, the rate rises.
How to avoid it. Before joining, add the programme's service fee (at both the normal and campaign rate) to your per-product margin model and decide which products can carry it. Review the decision when the waiver period ends.
4. Wrong Weight or Dimensions Lead to Shipping Overcharges
The rule. Shipping fees are calculated from the parcel's actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Shopee Malaysia explains that when the weight or dimensions entered for a listing are wrong, "any difference in actual and estimated shipping fees due to inaccurate parcel weight/dimensions will be borne by sellers", and that orders with unusually high shipping fees can have payouts temporarily withheld while Shopee checks with the logistics partner (Shopee MY: Overcharged Shipping Fee). Shopee Singapore also has guidance on whether you can dispute a shipping overcharge (Shopee: overcharged shipping fees).
The trap. A listing created with a guessed weight, or a product that later ships in bigger packaging, keeps generating small overcharges that are hard to spot in a monthly total.
How to avoid it. Weigh and measure the packed parcel, not the bare product, and enter weight and dimensions at variation level. Recheck whenever you change packaging. If a charge looks wrong, use the platform's dispute process with your measurements as evidence.
5. Returns Can Cost More Than the Refund
The rule. Shopee Singapore's guidance on return shipping says that if a buyer's claim is valid, caused by the seller, and a return is required, both the return shipping fee and the forward shipping fee are borne by the seller (Shopee: Who will bear the forward and return shipping fee?). For lost or damaged orders shipped through Shopee Supported Logistics, compensation is calculated after deducting seller fees and any seller-borne voucher, and then a compensation cap applies (Shopee: Return/Refund Payments and Fees Overview).
The trap. Sellers assume a return just reverses the sale. In practice, a seller-caused return can add two shipping legs, and compensation for a lost parcel may be less than the item's price.
How to avoid it. Reduce seller-caused returns at source: accurate listings, correct variants and careful packing. Capture packing photos so that when a claim isn't your fault, you can show it. The hidden cost of losing a dispute explains why the true cost goes beyond the refund itself.
6. Introductory Fee Waivers End
The rule. Lazada Singapore advertises that new sellers get 0% Platform Commission Fee and 0% Free Shipping Max Fee for their first 90 days (Lazada: Sell on Lazada). Lazada Malaysia's community pages similarly say commission is charged once sellers have been on the platform for more than 90 days (Lazada MY: Marketplace Commission Rate).
The trap. Prices set during the waiver period look profitable, and nobody revisits them on day 91. Margin drops overnight while revenue looks unchanged.
How to avoid it. Price from day one as if the waiver didn't exist, or set a calendar reminder to reprice before it ends. The same applies to Shopee programme waivers such as the PXP trial period.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Shopee transaction fee in Singapore in 2026?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Shopee Singapore's Seller Education Hub gives the standard transaction fee as 3.27% (GST-inclusive) of the final payment amount, including buyer-paid shipping and Shopee Vouchers, Coins or Rebates. Some payment methods can carry a different rate. Check Seller Centre for the current figure.
Do Shopee Malaysia fees include SST?
Shopee Malaysia applies 8% SST on top of platform fees, effective 1 March 2024. The transaction fee is quoted as 3.78% inclusive of SST, and commission and other service fees are subject to 8% SST as well.
Does a seller voucher reduce the commission I pay on Shopee Malaysia?
According to Shopee Malaysia, the Marketplace commission is charged on the product price after deducting seller product discounts and seller vouchers. Check the current commission page for your category, as rules can change.
Are introductory fee waivers worth taking?
They can be, as long as you price for the full fee level. Waivers lower your costs for a limited period; setting prices that only work during that period creates a margin drop when it ends.
